What is Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR), or paintless dent removal has become extremely popular over the last two decades. PDR is a less expensive way to remove dents, dings, and creases from the body of your automobile. It is the preferred process by many insurance agents, car owners, and auto body mechanics because it is less expensive and doesn’t involve sanding and re-painting the vehicle.

Those who practice PDR are generally experienced mechanics that are skilled in manipulating certain types of metal from various location of a vehicle. It is most commonly used for repairing hail damage, minor creases, door dings, bodylines damage, or large dents. It is also utilized when preparing to repaint a damaged panel as it minimized the need for body filler.

Certain situation will increase the chance for success when using PDR, such as the thickness of the metal, the curvature or flatness where the damage occurred, also the intensity of the impact. The shallower the dent the better chance you have that PDR will be successful.

When Paintless Dent Repair Isn’t the Answer

Although a great solution to many situtions, Paintless Dent Repair is not the best solution for Auto Body dents. Paintless Dent Repair does not work for every situation. It will not work if your car’s paint has been broken, chipped, scratched, or cracked. For these situations, you will need to have the panel replaced and/or repainted. It also depends where the dent is located, if the dent is in an ackward location, such as edges of doors, the paintless dent tools will not be reach. Also, if the dent is too close to the car’s roof it is almost impossible to smooth out.

Another reason that PDR might not be the right solution for your vehicle depends on the type of automotive exterior paneling. As exterior paneling evolves it is becoming more common for lightweight aluminum to support a number of honeycomb braces, these braces make it more difficult for mechanic to access dents in certain areas.

The Technique Behind Paintless Dent Repair

Every technician has his or her own style and technique when it comes to PDR; however, they generally break down to two main styles. You can work on the dent from the inside by pushing out the dents and using a metal rod and body pick. Or you can work on it from the outside by pulling the dent out which will require glue and specially designed tabs. For either method the technicians will have to be skilled at manipulating metal at the exact right height and precise location. The style you use greatly depends on the location of the dent, the size and extent of the damage as well as the elasticity of the paint.
